Leisure Time and Us
2024
A collaborative project with a senior day centre in Bratislava, exploring intergenerational dialogue and memory preservation through mobile photography workshops.
I established a collaboration with a community social day centre for seniors located in Bratislava’s Old Town. The centre focuses on active ways of spending leisure time and offers a wide range of courses, such as music therapy, language classes, Pilates, self-defence courses, and memory training.
The activity I contributed to the programme was a workshop titled Mobile Phone Photography: Family Mini-Galleries. My intention was to create a space for mutual sharing and interaction, in which we could participate in the creation of something collective.
The workshop functioned as a form of learning new visual patterns for preserving memories and experiences for the future—memories to which the participants will one day return, but now through a contemporary tool they did not grow up with. It was about searching for a shared language despite differing generational experiences, and despite activities that are often appropriated by the other generation. The time I spent in the centre with the senior women also speaks to an effort toward caring for memory within a multigenerational, inclusive collective.
My thanks go to Monika Spišiaková, coordinator of the G52 Centre, for making it possible for me to spend time at the centre and for providing space, time, and assistance in organising the workshop.
Thanks also to Bianka Ézsölová for her help with documenting the workshop.
