About Me

Karla Šavrtková (*2000) is a Slovak photographer and research-led visual artist. In her work, she focuses on the crisis of memory and identity within the context of post-socialist Central European countries and their historical transformations. She collaborates with individuals, communities, and archives, creating research-based projects that combine photography with other visual media, text, and archival materials to build layered spatial narratives. Field research, social contact, and collaboration are essential components of her self-reflective documentary practice.

She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Photography and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. She completed study exchanges at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, and Aalto University in Finland. In 2023, she was a finalist in the “Different Worlds 23” open call and participated in the group exhibition of the same name at Photon Gallery in Ljubljana. Since 2024, she has been a member of the international collective Rethinking Eastern Europe, which reflects on contemporary Eastern European identity. With the collective, she exhibited in the group show In the Space Between Words at Copeland Gallery in London (2025), where she presented her bachelor diploma project Patterns Within Us.
