About Karla Šavrtková

Karla Šavrtková (*2000) is a Slovak photographer and research-based visual artist. Her work focuses on questions of memory, archives and the politics of representation, particularly in relation to photography and its role in shaping personal and collective narratives. Through photographs, video, archival materials and text, she explores how images participate in constructing cultural identities and historical imaginaries. Field research, social contact, and collaboration are essential components of her self-reflective documentary practice.
She holds an MA in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where she graduated in the Studio of Photography and Critical Practice. During her studies she completed study exchanges at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, and Aalto University in Finland. In 2023, she was a finalist in the “Different Worlds 23” open call and participated in the group exhibition of the same name at Photon Gallery in Ljubljana. Since 2024, she has been a member of the international collective Rethinking Eastern Europe, which reflects on contemporary Eastern European identity.
